THE OTTERS 2014
The Skateboarding Academy Awards, commonly known as The Otters, is an international online awards ceremony honouring achievements in the skateboard industry. Winners are awarded the otter certificate, officially the Academy Award of Merit, that is much better known by its nickname The Otter. The awards, presented in 2015 in Auckland, New Zealand are overseen by the Academy of Muckmouth Publications.
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY - DRPURPLETEETH
Also known as Mike Aldape, Dr Purple Teeth is the most exciting cameraman of the last year. Admittedly he may use a Go-Pro on a selfie-stick, but boy oh boy does it look good and he gets close! Follow this young man's handiwork on the gram.
BEST NEWCOMER - TIAGO LEMOS
With two outstanding parts and an impeccable style, Tiago proved himself worthy of best newcomer in this years Otter Awards. His Silver Trucks section was awe inspiring only to be followed up with a section in this years Gold Goons (which although can't be considered for these awards, he'd already won with the Silver part).
LONGEVITY AWARD - DAEWON SONG
Filming ground-breaking video parts for a quarter a century is no easy task. And Daewon has done more than. We are treated to daily insane instagram clips. As my friend Cameron said, "I feel sorry for all the other pros" after I sent him the Daewon Insta remix from last week.
BEST VERT SECTION - TONY HAWK - PERCHED
Tony's Perched section was fucking mental - what with Guy Mariano inspired ledge tricks to the front foot impossible japan, it was the best vert section of the year. Respect. Gold Otter.
POLARISING SECTION - DYLAN RIEDER - CHERRY
Not many videos inspire a whole generation these days. Cherry did. And Dylan's part was literally the cherry on top of the Cherry. His polarising section was loved by many and loathed by others. I'm from the former. However, this gives the handsome young man a silver.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD - RON ALLEN
I neglected Ron last year. He's now 51. He's been skating and ripping for over 30 years. Enjoy your silver, my man.
BEST GRAMS - GUY MARIANO
Guy killed it last year. 38 years old and still doing the most innovative, insane tricks. Guy was a bit of a hero in 2014 on the gram. Even inspiring Tony Hawk (another Otter winner) to learn some of Guy's tricks on vert. Fandabbydoubledozey.
UNDERATTED AWARD - RODRIGO TX
Personally I feel Rodrigo slips off the radar when people talk of their favourites. The all the time greats. Rodrigo has been around and killing it since the late 90s and has always impressed. Plus he never seems to age or slow down. He really deserves this GOLDEN OTTER.
SKATER OF THE YEAR - NYJAH HUSTON
Fuck knows why Njyah hasn't won skater of the year yet. He's been the best skater without a doubt for the last 3 year. Perhaps in four. You may find him annoying, you might not be able to relate to him. Whatever. He's easily the best skater in the world right now. I'm backing him. He's even got a sick style.
