After watching a couple of years of Thrasher’s King of the Road, I couldn’t help but wonder how a New Zealand version would work out. Sure, it sounds great in theory but would people do it?
With nothing but pride and having a good fucking time at stake, would NZ skateboarders actually dedicate a whole weekend to it? ...and then edit a video of their efforts?
Of course they bloody would! With this in mind, and some amazing wordplay (if I do say so myself)
‘King of the AoteaRoada’ was born. I put the feelers out on the forum and the feedback was all positive and challenge suggestions came in thick and fast.
Zukerburg insisted I moved it onto Facebook to spread the message even further, the teams wanting to take part quickly rose and soon we even had teams in Australia signing up to the weekend of mayhem.
With no interest in anyone putting restrictions on what challenges were ‘acceptable’ I didn’t even look for a sponsor. No prizes, no rules, no worries.
Now two years deep, things are popping off. The first year was about 11 teams - with crews in Auckland tagging other team vehicles, rumours of penis piercing in the South Island and some NZ born Aussies even took part. An amazing time was had by all. I got a $250 ticket for skating on the motorway, kids boards were focussed, tattoos were inked on for life, injuries occurred, NBD tricks were done (D) and hair dye and facial hair extreme makeovers were a plenty.. The list goes on and on... Eating snails, shot gunning 4 Red Bulls in a row, skating police stations, even kissing other men :/
The second year was just as skitz, maybe more so. Lots of nudity (male and female), fires, poo, piss, kissing, drinking lots and lots of fucking booze. Oh and skating too. We usually try and have a bout 100 skate challenges and a 100 non skate ones - ranging from shaving in Craig David facial hair, kissing a girl over 40/50/60 to flatground Benihanas, kickflip pretzels, triple flips and caveman boardslides and the Lee Ralph and Greg Timms challenges (skate barefoot and ollie up a set of 5 stairs.. Guess which was which) plus tail spinning scooter and shit as well - not sure which category that goes in.
This is a compilation of the 2011 entries:
... and most of the 2012 videos can be found here.
2014 promises to be even bigger. Every cunt that took part has loved it "best weekend of my LIFE" was thrown around, as was "we should do this EVERY time we go skating" by Brett Band. Although I'm not sure anyone would survive more than a couple of weeks of that.
Everybody is invited. Regardless of skill level - If you can't double frontiside flip naked, then perhaps you are good at drinking vodka and kissing women over 60? There is a place for everyone. We might even get some prizes for the next one. Rest assured though, there will still be no rules. Ever.
Oh and sorry for stealing your idea Phelpsy and the boys at Thrasher.. But yeah, you know what they say ‘imitation is the sincerest form of flattery’ and all that... Ours was better anyway.
In summary, words cannot really do the event justice, so here are some pics of some shit that happened. See you next year, fuckers. More here
The weekend doesn't consist ENTIRELY of naked men...
On closer inspection, I was wrong - it is just a load of naked men. See you in 2014!
