A FEW MINUTES WITH DENNIS BUSENITZ 

What are the chances of bumping into your favourite skater on the other side of the world at your local skatepark? Well I did at Victoria Park today. Dennis just arrived in Auckland with Dave Chami for a Transworld trip with Joey Pepper, Josh Mathews, Walker Ryan and Nestor Judkins. I had a quick sit down with Dennis and his sons for a few minutes. Then it rained and I went home and made pancakes.

How do you feel about your prestigious Otter award from yesterday?
Stoked - just found about it now.

Yeah you got a gold otter for being every skater's favourite skater.
It's been my lifelong dream, what can I say?

Ok, now we cleared that one up, who has your favourite style in Skateboarding?
Style? Erm, Gino Iannucci always has an amazing style.

Favourite all time skateboarders?
Cardiel.

(Felix pipes up..) What's your favourite breakfast food for dinner?
Pancakes... With bacon

Haha, We ask the deep questions man! You seem pretty content and loyal to your sponsors, do you ever feel like breaking out and doing your own thing?
No, not really.. It seems like too much work and I don't see the point. I'll let Jim (Thiebaud) have the sleepless nights.

Is it a conscious decision to skate so fast?
No, it's just how I do it. No consciousness.

Do you plan your lines or is it all spontaneous?
Sometimes they're planned, sometimes they just work out.

Tell me about your dog!
She just loves to go skating and stuff, she's a good companion. She's just getting old so I can't take her skating as much and she can't walk the next day. So I'll slow it down a bit.

I saw your little lad on the Aotea stairs this morning doing the firefracker!
Oh yeah yeah, he's getting into skating.

Is he loving it? I saw him in the little Busenitz shoes.
No they're Sambas. But they're going to make little ones but they're not out yet.. But just now he's getting stoked on it. He's always messed around with skateboards, but now he's doing stuff. I can tell he's fired up.

Do you keep up with the kids online? Do you watch Hellaclips?
Yeah yeah, not Hellaclips, but I always hear about cool videos to watch. It's kind of overwhelming how much shit is going on. It's a little much sometimes.

That trick of you at Third and Army that Dave took is pretty much like my favourite skate photo of all time. How long did that take?
Ah, like 3 days... 3 or 4 days or something and a couple of hours each..

What's your favourite line of your dads (to Dennis's son) Was it that insane one he did at Third and Army?
Yes! hahaha. 

What's the vibe with the cutdown tongues? I never cut mine, I love them as they are.
I keep mine. We just did those for people who don't want them. What if people don't like it? It was like a bit of a concern at the time.

Are you wearing the Vulcs are the Original Busenitz?
The Vulcs lately. I wore so many of those (originals), switching it up a bit.

It's hard to find the originals here now man... I've had every colour under the rainbow.
Hahaha... That's not my department.. 

So your family is all living in America now?
Yeah, all good kids. Are you good kids or not? 

Dennis' son: Yeah.

What's the next video you're working on?
Er, the Adidas Video.. Am I not supposed to say that? Haha.. They're planning on one. A Volcom video too. A full skate video. 

I just watched the latest video - you had a few tricks in that.
Yeah, but this is a real full skate video...

Is there a new Real Video?
No, they haven't talked about that.

What are you working on now? Any other side projects?
I'm building ramps and stuff. I guess. Concrete stuff and playing around with that.

What, modifying stuff?
Er, no no, just from scratch. I built a cement mixer and stuff and just playing around. It's hard to do right.. Haha
