THE EARLY 90S WERE ACTUALLY FUCKING DOPE

Many articles have been written about this era. But they all seem to have a common theme, "The early 90s sucked". I keep hearing this. Phelps said it most recently in a Love Letters and to be honest I find that fucking offensive. Just because he couldn't skate street back then and vert was (sadly) dying he has bad feelings towards it. Well not all of us do. Some of us fucking love that period and have very nostalgic positive memories. Here's why:

THE VIDEOS

The early 90s brought us the beginning of tech skating. We were blessed with World Industries' Love Child after the 1991 "bridge" of Video Days. Plan B's Questionable next followed Virtual Reality just a year later. These videos are insane. There's nothing that sucked about this.

THE CLOTHES

Phelps may say the 90s sucked. Well fuck that, at least we were original. Nowadays everyone's a hipster with floppy t shirts and sockless arty trousers or they're a punk or a rapper. In the early 90s we were skateboarders. The baggier pants the better - and we stood out. Something I'm proud to say we all embraced. Huge neck tees, cut of crazy baggy jeans and sick sports shoes. We may have all looked the same, but at least we didn't look like everyone else on earth.

HAIR

We all were blonde. Carroll/Jason Lee did it first, but a sea of died blonde puffy haired skaters is probably the best thing that's ever happened. "something about alex olson thinking hes being edgy bringing "gay" into skating not realising in the early nineties kids all over the world were bleaching their hair blonde, exposing their buttocks and doing "whatever it took" to get to San Francisco?"

VIBING

VENTURE TRUCKS

Loyal to fault. Stuck by Venture thick and thin. Fuck knows why, but if it's not broke (literally) why fix it?

TRICKS

Modern street skating was invented then. Some tricks were pioneered in the late 80s, but 92-95 saw some of the best tricks people are still doing to this day coined. Pressure Flips get a lot of hate, and again, i'm biased here, but I ripped at pressure flips and still do so I think they are sick. Plus, Javontae killed it with them. There's nothing wrong with a solid well landed pressure if done WELL.

BIG BROTHER

Thank fuck for big brother issues 1 - 20. From 1992 - 1995. poignant years.

SKATE SPOTS

From Plazas, to long gone ledges and banks to Spitltlefiends in London, from St Albans and Radlands to Carlsbad.. the early 90s had the spots.

DECKS

Crazy shaped boards, meant some hard skating, but if you could ride these giant pieces of wood, then you fucking killed it. At the time it didn't stop us.

SHOES

Gazelles, Shell Toes, Clydes, States. No one gave a fuck if your shoes were from a sports brand back then. Another part of the clique knowing you belonged to a group of like minded dope cunts

SHIRTS

T SHIRTS... inside out, back to front. Best designs. These tees have become very collectable now and for a very good reason. They were dope.

MUSIC

Del the Funky Homosapien, Beastie Boys, Casual, Hierogyphics, Wu, Method Man, Kool G Rap... the best rap came from this period. Then Operation Ivy, Bad Religion.
Fuck you and your early 90s was shit - it was dope.
