MIKE YORK INTERVIEW

Mike York was an EMB OG that found himself on some of the sickest teams throughout his career. With a few ups and downs, Mike is back with a new company Roller Horror and things are looking good. We had a word with Yorkatron to get an insight on what he's up to at the moment and ask a few things about the good old days at EMB etc.

What’s the deal with Roller Horror, I see that you just make cruiser shape boards, is that what you are skating these days?
Yeah I have been into different shapes for a while now. So I wanted to make a brand more for skateboarding than ego. Just fun stuff.

Pretty original idea, make good quality cruisers that can actually be skated properly too. How is that the company going man?
It's going!! We are getting a lot of orders all over the world. I didn't expect such a warm welcome to the industry. It's cool how many skaters dont give a shit about the blah blah and just wants to skate! That's what it's all about! Fun.

Is there going to be a team at all?
No team, just Roller Horror Fan Club Members.

Care to elaborate to what happened with Turf?
Let's just say too many cooks ruined the soup. I wasn't happy so I had to bail out.

When you got on Blueprint did you know there were a million British skate nerds having emotional breakdowns because the company was still going after the OG team left?
I was and still am clueless about it. I just skate.

When you found out did you give a fuck?
Haha!

What happened over there anyway? Just feel like it was time to do your own thing?
I always wanted to do my own thing. My contract was up so I started Roller Horror.

You changed the whole game in 2013 with the two 3flips in a row in your FTC part, what have you got lined up for 2014?
I'll have a part in the GraciasLA video. Keep your eyes peeled!

Who is your favourite ledge dancer of the new guys?
Tpuds is the king of the tech ledge skating!

You’ve been sponsor hopping like crazy for the last few years especially with shoes, how happy would you be to find a Nike or similar that will let you stop all this filming and get your Castillo/Gino chill on?
No thanks. I'm happier getting free stuff, skate more on the low, and trying to grow Roller Horror than having that pressure.

Are you sitting on any 4ce/Dekline/Axion heat, getting ready to drop the bomb on eBay in 2020?
Haha nope.

You were a well known heckler back in the day, what would the young Mike York make of you now do you think?
He'd love me! He'd always ask me where I get my stuff from. He bites all my tricks anyway.

Do you remember when Jamie Thomas first started skating/sleeping Embarcadero? How did he go down with the locals?
I'm not sure. Some people didn't like him and others couldn't care less. I always thought he was gnarly. I was a kid in those days.

What’s up with Sanchez these days, ever speak to him?
Not really. He's a skater dad doing his thing! That's my man!!

You're a family man these days, how is that all going? Your kids like skating at all?
That's what I'm into the most. I couldn't care less what some skater I don't know thinks of my one foots.
